Designer Says Art Is Work

You’ve probably seen his ‘I Love NY’ advertising blitz; innumerable amounts of bumper stickers, t-shirts and buttons flooded the state. An entire generation can instantly recognize the famous silhouette of a singer with crowns of lightning bolts and rainbow-colored hair. Also, anyone who owns an LP collection dating from the 1960s most likely has one to several of his renowned graphic design pieces. Many people recognize his work even if they don’t know his name, but can it be considered art? The designer doesn’t want to talk about that. He’d rather we just didn’t use the word ‘art’. During an interview he said he felt the word “art” ought to be thrown out altogether and that creative expressions should simply be called “work”. And when it is a striking, visionary or otherwise out of the ordinary piece, it should be called a “great work”. If it hits its mark, it can be referred to as ‘good’ and if it fails, call it ‘bad’.

Sometimes called the Picasso of design, he once featured an exhibit that traced his wanderings through life. Using bright red rope, he showed the interconnection between the finished works and their inspirations.  He also hung process drawings and sketches. This is the way he conducts his process. Sometimes you don’t know your exact destination, and only find it when you travel through life and stumble upon ideas.

Paper wings and an angel postcard helped him create a gorgeous painting. These two things hung on the wall across from the finished painting. A comic strip is hung across from another stunning work. A poster he created features a famous pianist that is sneezing, making light of the idea that some people have “stuffy” thoughts about classical music. The artist refers to the world as his visual resource. He utilized the theme of a notable painting to communicate his message in a poster he made for an Italian typewriter company. The famous work shows a sad dog posing beside it’s master’s feet.  The master is clearly dead. In the poster, a red typewriter replaces the deceased master.

He helped design a remarkable studio in New York that has inspired designers to create better work. Teaching other city magazines across the nation, he helped create a big city’s magazine. He’s designed observation decks, restaurants, and even an exhibition for a prominent trade center. Additionally, he created the international AIDS symbol and poster, and a chain of grocery stores as well. The graphic artist likes to design for differing ideas; and also enjoys expanding the rules of design as far as he can.

With over at least six million copies printed and distributed to the public, his celebrated poster of a male singer is amongst his most prized pieces. The poster itself is abstract with elaborate colors in the hair that are similar to yet another famous artist. He says that a lot of people ask him if he created the poster while he was on drugs. However, he has never said that he took drugs. A playground for children and giant version for adults are also among his works.

How much should I sell my very rare orange and white cat webkinz for?

do you mean the Cheeky Cat? There is no pet listed as an “orange and white cat”
