How Small Will They Get? – The New Generation Super-Mini Audio Power Amplifiers
Latest types of audio super-mini amplifiers prove that audio technology has gone the same course as computer technology and cell phones. Products are shrinking at a rapid tempo. At the same time, manufacturers are packing in more and more features. The majority of audio amplifiers would be tube amps in the past. Although a large number of fanatics still is fond of tube amplifiers, they have been substituted by solid state amps for the most part.
Modern solid-state amplifiers merge the traditional pre amp and power amp stages into a neat single package no larger than a DVD player. A new generation of super-miniature amplifiers, such as the Amphony Model 100 microFidelity amp, has become feasible due to new developments in audio technology regarding power efficiency. These mini amps take up no more room than a deck of cards but deliver up to 50 Watts, which is adequate to drive a speaker to high volume.
Past audio amplifiers with “Class-A” and “Class-AB” architectures have quite low power efficiency. Only a small percentage of the consumed power – typically in the order of 20% to 30% – is actually transformed into audio by analog amplifiers. The remaining portion is radiated as heat. This requires that depending on the supported output power, analog audio amps have to provide considerable cooling which is accomplished by employing heat sinks. These heat sinks do not permit these amplifiers to be made very small.
“Class-D” amplifiers are based on a digital design which offers higher power efficiency than “Class-A” or “Class-AB” amplifiers – normally in the order of 80% to 95%. Thus only a small portion is wasted as heat which was the key in being able to miniaturize audio amplifier designs. One major difficulty which has slowed the growth of “Class-D” amplifiers is audio distortion which is caused by nonlinearities of the switching output stage.
Newer amplifier technologies have emerged such as “Class-T” and newer “Class-D” architectures. These technologies, such as the one used in Amphony’s Model 100 provide for a feedback of the output signal to the amplifier input. This feedback allows the amplifier to compensate for nonlinearities of the output switching stage and thus lower audio distortion to comparable levels of analog amplifiers while preserving the audio efficiency of digital amplifiers.
These latest miniature audio amplifiers open up applications where previous amplifiers have failed. They are suited in particular for installations with minimum space, such as in ceiling speakers. Other applications include connecting speakers to a DVD/MP3 player or cable box.
Are earphone output and normal output on a guitar amp the same?
i have an amp with volume, treble,bass, clean/gain(button), input jack, and earphones jack. i want to get some effects pedal to go along with it like a wah pedal or an overdrive pedal. i want to know if it could be attached to the earphones jack or do i have to get a new amp with a specific output jack
OH man….your confused.
The headphone jack is nothing more than a jack for your headphones.
If you want to get a pedal that controls different settings on your amp than thats totally different but from what you’re saying your amp doesnt have the option to connect a pedal to IT.
But dats just the thing…..if you want to get a wah wah or overdrive pedal noone cares what your amp is, You could be plugging into a tv set for all I care.
These pedals and MOST pedals out there have an input for your guitar and an output for whatever amp your getting your sound out of. The pedal doesnt control the amp….it changes the sound going into it.

All you need to get is a pedal and another cable if you dont have one.
